A moment that changed everything
Jackie James built her life around beauty — the kind you create, the kind you share, and the kind you find in everyday moments with the people you love. As the creator behind @jaxandrose, she connected with tens of thousands of followers through honest skincare routines, real-life motherhood, and a warmth that made every follower feel like a friend.
On May 19, 2023 — one week before her due date — everything changed. Jackie suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm at home. Her husband Austin found her collapsed and called 911. At the hospital, a team of over thirty doctors performed an emergency C-section and craniectomy simultaneously. The blood clot on the left side of her brain was approximately three and a half inches long. Both Jackie and baby Knoxly Rose survived.
I was given a 50/50 chance of making it through the night. But coming out of my coma, I was surrounded by hope.
Jackie was placed in a medically induced coma for nearly four weeks and underwent five brain procedures. When she woke, she couldn't speak, swallow, or breathe on her own. She was diagnosed with expressive aphasia and right-side weakness. Doctors initially said she might never walk or regain full use of both limbs. Meanwhile, baby Knoxly spent 12 days in the NICU before being discharged to Jackie's sisters.
But Jackie chose hope. Through ten months of rehabilitation across four states, she fought her way back — to speaking, to walking, to doing makeup with her left hand, to showing up on camera again. In March 2024, she returned to Instagram with her first video. In May 2025, she and Austin shared their story on the TODAY show.
Now, the family has sold everything in California and is traveling the country — and the world — chasing the best therapies for Jackie's continued recovery. She documents it all: the breakthroughs, the hard days, the small victories that feel enormous. Not to build a brand — but because if her story can make one woman feel less alone on her worst day, every word is worth it.
